  2. I hope you can help.

Currently I rent a 1 bed flat, from GHA, I recieve DLA (Low Rate Care) and Long term incapacity benefit, Obviously Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefits too.

I am 24. Not 25 till may next 2009, My best friend lives with me, but as he doesn’t get carers allowance GHA Won’t acknowlege my requirements for a 2 bed, even tho there are no non-dependant deductions in my h.b. (He is Employed)

Why they do not pair regulations with Glasgow City Council I don’t know (Any comments welcome)

I am having to look into Private Letting to get a second bedroom.

Should this occour, Where do I stand with h.b. (or Local Housing Allowance) As I am 24?

  3. Local Housing Allowance unfortunately takes NO account of disabilities or illness. So if you rent in the private sector you will receive up to the LHA maximum housing benefit of £69.23 per week to age 24, £92.31 per week from age 25 (those are the June 2008 figures, see http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/YourHome/HousingBenefit/LocalHousingAllowance/ for more up to date figures).

However, if that was less than your actual rent, then in those circumstances you could and should claim Discretionary Housing Payment ( http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/2E7D2B7C-C61D-4325-BEB7-0C816191D38E/0/W5172.pdf ) as a top up. It normally only lasts for a few months though, but you can (and should) keep re-applying before it runs out.

There are (apparently ineffectual so far) public campaigns from charities against the failure of local housing allowance to take disability into account. Were real political activists to put there time to campaigning for that also it may have more chance of succeeding.

The most obvious route to go down would be to pressure Glasgow Housing Association to give you a proper size of flat. Social rented landlords like GHA are not bound by local housing allowance limits: they could, if they wanted to, give you a two bedroom flat, and have that accepted by the Housing Benefit Office. In fact, I know they very often do – friends of mine are single with no children and yet have two bedroom GHA flats. And that’s without being disabled. Sounds like you’re being fobbed off by GHA. Try escalating it within GHA – to your community housing manager (get his/her email easily from a google search), then to Taroub Zahran, the GHA Chief Executive. A public campaign with us and others may be needed to get you moved up GHA’s letting list.

The 6th of December, the day when 15 year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos was shot dead by police without provocation, marked the beginning of a social uprising in Greece. His unlawful killing quickly became a symbol for the peoples disquiet with political corruption and media manipulation and propaganda. Hundreds of thousands of people flooded the streets to protest and actively reclaim a better social, political and economic system that is based on humans’ basic rights of freedom and wellbeing and not capital or profit.

Since the 6th of December 2008 and until the 14th of January 2009 there have been 273 arrests*:
67 people already in prison awaiting trials.
19 people arrested in Larisa are being prosecuted under new anti-terrorist laws

In Solidarity to the Greek comrades and their social struggle, a gig is to be held this Saturday. It starts at 6pm in Forest Cafe, Edinburgh. Bands performing include: MOZKORRAK (drunken oi-oi) and BOTTOMFEEDERS ( local mentalists playing ersecore punk noise).

Entry is free, with donations towards legal expenses for those arrested during the Greek uprising

  8. @Scott – old school! VHS to digital is something I’ve been wondering about, but the only solution I came up with was one of those shops offering “video to DVD” conversion.
There’s one opposite Glasgow Green doing it for £10, I think.

  9. Looking for anarchist students or student groups!! We are organizing a convention of the student left in St Andrews, but it’d extremely hard to find anarchist student groups, as they don’t often affiliate with the university, so we can’t get in touch with them that way.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Convention is to be held on Saturday, April 25th, and currently our main goal is to bring the Scottish student left together, making it easier for us to network and share tactics.

    Thanks so much, everyone.

    My email is npduda@usfca.edu

  10. Could someone try and sort out the facebook group please?

  11. Are there any plans for action in support of Julian Assange? By yourselves or related groups?

I would very much like to do something about this.

    • I don’t really see the need to defend him. Julian Assange is not wikileaks for one thing. The facts of the case are unclear for another. It is good that people defend wikileaks itself but just because he founded wikileaks doesn’t mean he gets a free ride.

  12. Is there anything planned about the upcoming invasion of Libya?

  13. Evening all,

I’m posting this out as an open call to anyone who would be interested in contributing to an online left-wing blog/zine. Its been in the pipeline for a few months now, and intend it to be a collection of left-wing articles to stimulate debate and discussion. While I identify myself as an libertarian socialist, we have no ideological nor party affiliations. Unity in diversity. As we’re just starting up we’re looking for articles on pretty much anything. Be it theory, politics, philosophy, music, art….anything. If you interested, please get in touch.

    In solidarity.

  14. On March 7th some capitalist reformer is going to be giving a special talk on how giving people access to credit as a “human right” would solve the world’s problems. He’s going to be at the Caledonian University. My partner-in-crime and I are going to putting up posters in protest but I thought that you guys could help out. Here’s the link to the event: http://www.gcu.ac.uk/newsevents/news/article.php?id=40898&c=126 and here’s his brief bio from his website: http://www.muhammadyunus.org/About-Professor-Yunus/about-professor-yunus-vision/

I know it’s short notice but I only just learned about this. I’m going to be contacting a variety of anti-capitalists as well but you’d think the internet would have made it easier to do so… Anyway, I hope you could pass this on and maybe help us out a little.

Petition to end the cruel practice of live hare coursing in Ireland

    Dear Friends,

Please sign this petition (it takes only a few seconds) seeking support for the upcoming Bill to ban the horribly cruel practice of live hare coursing in Ireland.

Hare coursing is a so-called “sport” in which hares (jack rabbits to Americans) are set up as bait for greyhounds to chase and terrorize. Many hares are killed or horribly injured each year as they are mauled or tossed about like rag dolls on the coursing fields. Some hares die within seconds of being struck by the fast moving dogs. Others die of agonizing internal injuries, such as bone breakages that cannot heal.

A member of Ireland’s parliament, the Dail, will attempt in the coming months to have hare coursing banned.

We desperately need people to petition the government of Ireland, requesting its support for this Bill.

That’s where this petition comes in. Each time a person signs it, an email immediately goes to the Taoiseach and Tanaiste (Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland) requesting their support for the Bill.

    Thanking you,

    John Fitzgerald,

    CACS
