Thursday 12th July
- ‘Reactions to Crisis: Collective Appropriation in Greece’ Talk & Discussion
Electron Club, 1st Floor of CCA, Sauchiehall Street/Scott Street

Masked activists (self-identifying as anarchists) taking from supermarkets and handing goods to passers-by are the topic of this talk. Over 50 such acts have occurred across Greece since the beginning of the crisis in 2008 Is collective appropriation – i.e. taking the struggle from the ‘sphere of production’ to the ‘sphere of consumption’ – a tactic that can be used in other contexts, too? This talk and discussion will explore Collective Appropriation as a Reaction to the current economic crisis.

Hosted by Glasgow Anarchist Federation & Friends.

Thursday 12th – Monday 16th July
- Coal Action Scotland: Take Back the Land
Douglas Valley, South Lanarkshire

Opencast coal mining in the Douglas Valley is about the ruling class destroying communities for their own financial gain. Its about ecological destruction on a massive scale for capitalism’s unquenchable thirst for cheap energy. Its about absentee fat-cat land-lords making millions off land that shouldn’t be theirs. Its about morally corrupt local (and national) government putting profit before people.

Join us 12-18 July in the Douglas Valley, South Lanarkshire, to build on 20 years of community struggle and four years of direct action against the UK’s biggest opencast mining company. It’s time to Take Back the Land! ‘Take Back the Land!’ will be a space for taking action, sharing skills and learning through doing. It will be a welcoming and safe space for all those wishing to challenge the social injustice and environmental destruction caused by opencast coal mining operations in Scotland and throughout the world.

Building on previous years experience at camps such as the Mainshill Solidarity Camp, the Happendon Wood Action Camp and events such as the Outdoor Skillshares, we will be establishing a base for a week of high impact action and low impact, sustainable living. In solidarity with the communities of the Douglas Valley, we will be directly confronting the power structures and infrastructures which have dominated and scarred the valley for too long with a mass action planned for the 14th July and plenty of room for skilling up, recruitment and affinity group actions to be taken.

Friday 13th July
- ‘Push the Boat Out’ – Galgael Fundraiser GalGael,
15 Fairley Street, Govan, Glasgow, G51 2SN
8pm – 11pm

Bombskare and Lorraine McCauley & The Borderlands are teaming up to put on a unique gig in an amazing Boat Building Workshop in Govan, called The Galgael. Bombskare, Scotland’s 9-man ska juggernaut has been tearing up stages the length and breadth of the British Isles. Their trademark ska rhythms and lush harmonies, together with choppy guitar sounds and an explosive horn section truly blows the audience away. So it’s little wonder, The Scotsman, crowned them “Scotland’s premier ska band”.

BBC introduced singer – songwriter Lorraine McCauley will release her debut album this summer with her band The Borderlands. They recently supported Karine Powart, who has tipped them as the breakthrough act of 2012. Having visited the Galgael as a potential music video location, Lorraine and the Borderlands were blown away by the tremendous work carried out at the project. So it is with the support of the Galgael and Bombskare that the band will host this exciting fundraiser gig.

Together both bands will raise the roof and funds for the Galgeal, so don’t miss this unique one off event. All funds raised will go to support the wonderful work of The Galgael. So come join us on Friday 13th of July (Lucky for some) at the Galgael to Push the Boat Out!

Friday 13th July
- Polmadie Gasification Plant – Possible Campaign Meeting
Toryglen Community Base, Prospecthill Square, Glasgow, G42 0LE
1pm – 3pm

Urban Roots is hosting an open meeting for anyone interested in the Gasification project at Polmadie. This new plant will process all of Glasgow’s waste. Billed as a Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre, the proposed plant (which is currently in consultation stages) will separate additional household waste for recycling (we like this bit), but anything non economically viable to recycle will be chucked in the ‘gasifier’.

Gasifiers come under EU incineration regulations. Naturally we have concerns around emissions, incerased traffic and impact on local communities. Moreover though, there are clear contradictions between these proposed plans and the council’s own recycling targets and policies.

Glasgow City Council will sign a contract promising 175,000 tonnes of waste for the gasifier each year. With GCC recycling targets taken into account, the only way they could keep this would be to buy waste in from other local authorities. Join us at this meeting to discuss how we might coordinate action locally.

Sunday 15th July
- Glasgow Anti-Workfare Campaign Meeting
Kinning Park Complex, 43 Cornwall Street, Glasgow
3pm – 5pm

There have been a series of actions against workfare up and down the U.K., and in the last couple of weeks, the news has came through that due to campaigns directed against the company, Holland & Barrett have become the latest casualty, bowing to pressure from both outraged customers and campaigners alike, and announcing their exit from the scheme (see here – http://solfed.org.uk/?q=node/2608).

This is a meeting to discuss and plan what we in Glasgow can do to stand against Workfare.
